About Goats

The Pygmy Goat is very hardy, gentle and good-natured. They are self-exercising and fun to have around. Providing they are kept in the right conditions are rarely ill. They need the company of their own kind and should not be kept alone.

Housing : Pygmy goats do not need a lot of space. Two pygmy goats can be kept happily in a relatively small area. An 8` x 6` shed with hay rack is adequate for two goats. A secure 4` high fenced area around the shed where they can exercise, climb and jump is essential to stop them becoming board.

Feeding : A basic diet of two – three ounces of a goat mix twice daily in a small bowl should be fed. Hay should be fed ad lib and clean drinking water daily. They will also enjoy chopped up fruit and vegetables. Twigs, leaves, bark and some weeds will be welcomed as a treat. Beware of poisonous plants, main ones being yew, rhododendrum, laburnum and fir trees. Any new food should be introduced gradually.

Care : Pygmy goats are hardy animals and if looked after properly have few problems

  • Hoof Trimming Their hoofs grow fairly rapidly and need trimming every 6-8 weeks. It is relatively easy to do, just like cutting thick finger nails.
  • Worming  Regular worming is important and should be done twice a year in spring and autumn.
  • Vaccination It is recommended that they are vaccinated against enterotoxaemia, pulpy kidney and tetanus. Most vets use Lambivac. It is possible to vaccinate your goats yourself.
  • Mineral Block  A mineral block suitable for goats should be hung where they can reach it. They will use it if needed

Legal Requirements : By Law all goat keepers are required to register a holding number. To register you need to contact your local DEFRA office. All goats must be identified by an ear tag and movement between properties must be accompanied by an official movement license.

Getting Your Pygmy Goat : If buying your goats just as pets, then two castrated males or non-breeding females would be best. A cute male kid that has not been castrated will grow up to be a smelly goat.

The body is full-barelled and well muscled, circumference in relation to height and weight is proportionally greater than in other breeds. Males are considered mature at 30 months and females at 24 months.

The Pygmy Goat Club : The Pygmy Goat Club is the regulated body and official Breed Association of the pygmy goat. It was established in 1982 to protect the interests and improve the status of the pygmy goat in Britain. It sets down the Breed Standards and is responsible for the registration of herds and individual goats. For more information visit www.pygmygoatclub.org
