A pig house needs to be well ventilated but draught free, the pigs will provide the warmth. A bed of straw enables the pigs to make a warm comfortable bed and prevent injury to their hocks. An outside exercise area is needed with good drainage. There are ready made pig arks available in a variety of materials (corrugated iron, wood and plastic). A shed can be used but needs to be at least 6` square with a concrete floor.
Sturdy fencing is essential with a single strand of barbed wire at ground level to stop rooting underneath. Two strand of electric fencing can be used. One strand 9″ off the ground and the other 9″ above it. The thicker the gauge the better the conductivity. If breeding stock they are best kept outside on grass. In warm weather they need a wallow, the muddier the better.
